PHILIP H. CORBOY, 1925-2012

Philip H. Corboy passed away June 12, in Chicago, with his wife Mary Dempsey at his side. Phil was 87.

No trial lawyer ever fought more ferociously for his clients than Phil. Over a legendary 50 year career, Phil successfully represented countless victims of medical malpractice and product liability. Those of you who knew Phil, may recall that his only loss at trial in the past thirty years was reversed by the appellate court.

Phil once said, “Personal injury trial lawyers are in the rare position of being able to level the playing field to help people in the war against organized money: insurance companies, corporations, healthcare providers, common carriers, manufacturers, cities, states, and government.”

We will miss Phil Corboy dearly. He was a member of our association for more than 40 years and was, at the time of his death, a Life Member. His long list of honors and achievements is simply too long to enumerate here, but among other distinctions, Phil served as president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association (which awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996) and as president of the Chicago Bar Association. He was our Champion of Justice Award winner in 1999. In 1998, Phil became only the second trial lawyer in history to have a street named for him in Chicago, when Washington Street between Dearborn and Clark was named Philip Corboy Way.

Phil leaves his beloved wife, Mary Dempsey, his three sons, Philip Harnett Corboy, Jr., John R. Corboy, and Thomas M. Corboy, his eight grandchildren, his brother and sister-in-law, niece, nephews, his most caring in-laws, his devoted partners and office staff, and many friends. Corboy was predeceased by his only daughter, Judge Joan Marie Corboy, who died at age 45, and his youngest son, Robert J. Corboy, who died at age 12.

We will take time at our Board meeting in Chicago to appropriately honor Phil’s outstanding life and service. He leaves behind an enduring legacy.

The funeral will be held at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
